WHO & WHAT: Join Dr. Avriel Epps and Patrisse Cullors in a transformative workshop to celebrate the paperback release of Cullors' An Abolitionist Handbook: 12 Steps to Changing Yourself and the World. Building on the final chapter, "Fight the U.S. State, Do Not Make It Stronger," the workshop will explore the current deployment of AI as an instrument of U.S. imperial power and challenge prevailing media and Hollywood narratives that depict AI as a force of inevitable dominance and disruption.
Through critical analysis and interactive discussion, participants will reimagine and reshape the future intersection of technology and social justice, and consider how an abolitionist approach to AI development can actively subvert power structures, paving the way for a genuine abolitionist democracy characterized by healing and transformative justice.

Cullors launched a ground-breaking Social and Environmental Arts Practice MFA program at Prescott College where she served as the Founding Director for two years. She is the co-founder of the Crenshaw Dairy Mart and has been on the frontlines of abolitionist movement building with Black Lives Matter, Justice LA, Dignity and Power Now and Reform LA jails. Her current work and practice is focusing on “Abolitionist Aesthetics,” a term she has advanced and popularized to help challenge artists and cultural workers to aestheticize abolition. Patrisse is also the founder of The Center For Art and Abolition — a trailblazing nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering abolitionist artists and leveraging the transformative power of art to catalyze social change.
Patrisse has won numerous awards for her art and activism. In September 2021, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Patrisse’s appointment to serve as one of three Second District Arts Commissioners. Patrisse’s mission is to invite all of us to grow towards abolition through intergenerational healing work that centers love, collective care, and art.
Dr. Avriel Epps (she/they), a Civic Science Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell University’s CATLab, holds a Ph.D. in Human Development from Harvard University and an S.M. in Data Science from Harvard’s School of Engineering. A scholar and advocate, Avriel’s research focuses on the intersections of algorithmic bias and identity development across racial and gender spectra. As co-founder of AI4Abolition, she is dedicated to enhancing AI literacy in marginalized communities. Avriel has been recognized and supported by The Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, Roddenberry Foundation, and National Center on Race and Digital Justice. Starting Fall 2025, she will serve as Assistant Professor of Fair and Responsible Data Science at Rutgers University. Her work is featured in both scientific journals and popular outlets, including The Atlantic and the Emmy-nominated PBS documentary "TikTok, Boom."
