Prentis Hemphill is a writer, an embodiment facilitator, political organizer and
therapist. They are the Founder and Director of The Embodiment Institute and The
Black Embodiment Initiative, and host of the podcast “Becoming the People.” For the
last ten years, Prentis has practiced and taught somatics in social movement
organizations and offered embodied practice during moments of social unrest and
organizational upheaval. They have taught embodied leadership with Black
Organizing for Leadership and Dignity and generative somatics and served as the
Healing Justice Director of Black Lives Matter Global Network from 2016 to 2018.
Their work and writing have appeared in the New York Times, the Huffington Post.
They are a contributor to “You are Your Best Thing”, edited by Tarana Burke and
Brene Brown, “Holding Change” by adrienne maree brown, and “The Politics of
Trauma” by Staci Haines. They live in North Carolina on a small farm with their
partner, child, two dogs, two chickens while working on an upcoming book on
healing justice. Their debut book “What it Takes to Heal” will be published on
Penguin Random House this June.
Called “a master of the genre” by The New York Times, solo performer and Tony Award-winner Sarah Jones is the writer and star of plays Bridge + Tunnel and Sell/Buy/Date, as well as the writer/director of the critically acclaimed film of the same name. Executive produced by Meryl Streep, the film tackles themes of racism, sexism and economic injustice through the lens of the sex industry. As a Black woman with multiracial roots, Sarah’s characters and storytelling reflect her commitment to a pluralist vision of social justice. Renowned as “a one-woman global village”, Sarah also starred as Yasmin in the Netflix series On the Verge, and has given a record four main-stage TED Talks; performed on stages from The White House to Riker’s Island; and is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Sarah is also the host of the upcoming podcast, America, Who Hurt You?
